From ” one-lunger” make-and-break engines to propellers, stoves and fittings, the Lunenburg Foundry’s craftsmen have been producing quality products for the marine industry since 1891. Visit the historic buildings, watch as castings are made, and see Foundry patterns for fittings, many of which are  common, and some of which  you won’t recognize.

4.  Dory Shop — by car. 132 Montague St., Lun. — 1:00 — 2:00 (no charge )http://www.doryshop.com. Since 1917, the Dory Shop has been building these classic ,sturdy  workboats from its location on the Lunenburg waterfront. With the exception of the use of a few power tools, not much has changed since that time. White pine, red pine, red oak, spruce roots andhot-dipped galvanized nails come together as they have for decades. Finished off with dory buff paint and ship’s green trim, the dory made today would be hard to differentiate from one made eighty years ago. See how the dories are made and have been made for all these years.

5.  Michelle Stevens’ Sailloft — by car. Owned and operated by Michele Stevens, Second Peninsula — 12:30 — 1:30  ( no charge ). Michele’s is a family business that began in the 1800s, and has made sails for, among others, the “Bluenose” and MGM’s flagship “The Bounty”. Be sure to include Michele Stevens’ Sailloft at 1602 Second Peninsula Rd. in your tour plans!

6.  Arthur Dauphinee’s Block and Tackle Shop — by car. Owned and operated by Arthur Dauphinee, Second Peninsula — 2:00 — 3:00 ( no charge ) click here

Arthur Dauphinee’s Block Shop on Second Peninsula is a must on your tour schedule. This shop is the ONLY HAND-MADE BLOCK SHOP IN CANADA ! This traditional artisan work was begun in the late 1800s by a man named Peter Loye. He fell ill, but Arthur’s grandfather, Alfred Dauphinee, married Peter’s daughter and took on the block business. Alfred and his wife had two sons, one of whom was Arthur’s father Alfred. Two ‘new’ buildings were built around 1900, one of which still exists in Lunenburg as the old Lunenburg Electric Building. Also there is the ‘new’ Block Shop, built in 1925 in Lunenburg. Arthur’s father ran that one until the family moved to Second Peninsula. The Block Shop you will visit has been there for twenty-five years, and Arthur’s beautiful blocks are prized world-wide by those for whom the mass-produced blocks from China just will not do for their beloved boats ! Drop in , see Arthur’s Shop, and have a chat — You’ll be glad you did !

Thanks to Arthur Dauphinee for consenting to this tour for the Mahone Bay Regatta.

This exciting event is aimed at 12- to 18-year-olds who don’t mind getting a bit wet while having a whole lot of fun!

Working in teams of three (including one adult), each team has an hour and a half to build a boat out of cardboard, styrofoam and duct tape—lots and lots of duct tape! We supply all of the materials, you supply the ideas and “boat-building” skills.

These are not models or toys. These boats are capable of carrying two paddlers in a race to the finish—or not!

Teams are rewarded for such things as First Across the Finish Line, Most Creative Design, Most Spirited Team and Most Spectacular Sinking.

Head to the wharf on Saturday at 1pm to watch the teams build their boats, and in the event of heavy rain, head up to the gym at the Mahone Bay Centre, where the teams will build. Pick your favourite team and see how they do in the race at 4pm at the wharf.

If you are interested in competing, contact the Regatta Coordinator and have a whole load of fun! Space is very limited, so apply early—the entry fee is $10.
