White pine, red pine, red oak, spruce roots andhot-dipped galvanized nails come together as they have for decades. Arthur Dauphinee’s Block Shop on Second Peninsula is a must on your tour schedule. This shop is the ONLY HAND-MADE BLOCK SHOP IN CANADA ! This traditional artisan work was begun in the late 1800s by a man named Peter Loye. He fell ill, but Arthur’s grandfather, Alfred Dauphinee, married Peter’s daughter and took on the block business. Alfred and his wife had two sons, one of whom was Arthur’s father Alfred. Two ‘new’ buildings were built around 1900, one of which still exists in Lunenburg as the old Lunenburg Electric Building. Also there is the ‘new’ Block Shop, built in 1925 in Lunenburg. Arthur’s father ran that one until the family moved to Second Peninsula. The Block Shop you will visit has been there for twenty-five years, and Arthur’s beautiful blocks are prized world-wide by those for whom the mass-produced blocks from China just will not do for their beloved boats ! Drop in , see Arthur’s Shop, and have a chat — You’ll be glad you did !
Thanks to Arthur Dauphinee for consenting to this tour for the Mahone Bay Regatta.
