Regatta Meeting May 6, 2010

The Mahone Bay Regatta Committee meeting was held last night and the turnout was fantastic. Some of those attending had been with the committee at the inaugural meeting but the there were many new faces in the crowd. And in every case the enthusiasm for the regatta was amazing. If we maintain that level of commitment, the overwhelming success of the regatta is assured.

The reports from the various Coordinators were encouraging. There is much work being done and key details are being identified and actioned. The races, the workshops and of course the Pirate Days theme are all well
underway. And other events are pending the commitment of more committee members…maybe you??

And we can always use the help of others. If you are interested to work with one of the groups, please contact us at info@mahonebayregatta.ca

ARRRRR!!!!

Chairman

Letter from the chairman

Finally, spring is here and everywhere there are signs that the Mahone Bay Regatta is really going to happen. The planning committee has met and the volunteers are eagerly and enthusiastically working to make the Mahone Bay Regatta the best event to celebrate the boating life that has ever been staged here. Many of the activities in the Regatta are those which were popular with visitors to the former festival. There will be boats, boats, and more boats; boats on the wharf; boats at the docks; boats on moorings; boats racing; boats orienteering – just lots of boats.

And there will be plenty of activities for the people on the boats and landlubbers alike to become involved in over the course of the Regatta. We currently have the most extensive venue of lectures and workshops that we have ever had. Boatyard tours, marine shop tours, hands-on workshops at the Mahone Bay center, presentations by a world class sailors as well as builders of world class boat models. And we will host the first Mahone Bay Regatta Art Gallery Show and Sale also at the Mahone Bay Center.

And then there is Pirate Day – scheduled for Saturday July the 31. This is shaping up to be the most exciting event of the entire weekend. It’s a chance for everyone – boaters, townsfolk, visitors, parents, children – everyone to get involved. There will be a workshop for children to help them put together a pirate costume. There will be prizes awarded for the costumes judged to be the best. The Burning of the Teazer will be the highlight of the event and will feature the involvements of the Kings Orange Rangers and two Royal Navy Longboat crews. All will ensure the Teazer goes to Davy Jones’ locker in a fiery explosion!!!! The team organizing the Pirate Day has some other activities up their Privateer’s sleeve but you’ll have to come to Mahone Bay to see what they are…Arrr Matey.

The town of Mahone Bay is waiting to welcome you. The shops and restaurants are there for you to shop or dine. You’ll find entertainment at a number of locations throughout the town as well at the town wharf. You may even spy a roving gang of Pirates (pardon Privateers) in the town trying to liberate some booty from the shopkeepers.

Mark your calendar now! Set sail for the Mahone Bay Regatta July 30 to August 1. If you have sea water running in your veins, the Regatta weekend may make it run cold.

If you are interested to join the team that will produce the Mahone Bay Regatta plan to drop by for our next meeting on Thursday, May 6 at the Mahone Monday center.

See you at the Regatta during the Midsummer long weekend.

Dave Devenne, Mahone Bay Regatta Chairperson

Treasure in Mahone Bay

Not only has Mahone Bay been a treasure since 1754 but during the Mahone Bay Regatta, you will now be able to hunt and win real treasure from the shops & stores in Mahone Bay.

In previous years, the beautiful shops in Mahone Bay have supported a fundraising silent auction for the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Society ( the society the Mahone Bay Regatta is part of) by donating treasures from their stores. This year, things will be a little different.  As there is a pirate theme to this years celebrations, we are organizing a TREASURE HUNT.

Thank you to the merchants in town who have already committed to this….!

Our thousands of visitors will now have the chance to hunt for their very own treasure in participating shops throughout town. You will be encouraged to drop in to our wonderful stores, select your desired treasures, mark them down on your treasure map and return them to our treasure chest. One winner will be selected at random and that lucky winner wins everything on their treasure map!
