Regatta Meeting May 6, 2010

The Mahone Bay Regatta Committee meeting was held last night and the turnout was fantastic. Some of those attending had been with the committee at the inaugural meeting but the there were many new faces in the crowd. And in every case the enthusiasm for the regatta was amazing. If we maintain that level of commitment, the overwhelming success of the regatta is assured.

The reports from the various Coordinators were encouraging. There is much work being done and key details are being identified and actioned. The races, the workshops and of course the Pirate Days theme are all well
underway. And other events are pending the commitment of more committee members…maybe you??

And we can always use the help of others. If you are interested to work with one of the groups, please contact us at info@mahonebayregatta.ca

Mahone Bay Regatta off to a flying start..

The Mahone Bay Regatta is off to a flying start.  The regatta, scheduled for July 30 – Aug 1, 2010 promises to be the most amazing event of its type ever held in Mahone Bay.  It is gaining momentum daily and we have much to do in the next two and a half months.

Many events are well in hand with some additional detail work required.  Other events are under development although detailed planning will become necessary in the coming weeks.  And some events like the Pirates’ Day and the Marine Art Gallery are taking on a life of their own.  We have heard from a number of people who are interested in volunteering to produce the regatta and we need your help.

If you have expressed an interest in working with the organizing team or if you have identified yourself as a Director for a specific event already, now is the time to come out.  Bring along a friend or neighbour who may like to get involved and spend some time with a dedicated, dynamic group of volunteers.  You will be able to get together with others interested in the regatta to compare notes, brainstorm ideas, get feedback from  peers, talk up the challenge and get involved.  As a group we can make it happen.

The next meeting of The Regatta Crew which has agreed to take up the challenge to organize the Mahone Bay Regatta is scheduled for Thursday May 6. 7:00 pm at the Mahone Bay Center.

Come to the meeting and get involved.  If you are interested to participate and take a lead role in one or more of the regatta events but you are unable to attend this meeting, let me know by e-mail or by phone.

The Mahone Bay Regatta will be an unqualified success if YOU get involved.  See you at the meeting.

Dave Devenne,  Chairman,  Mahone Bay Regatta

Welcome to the Mahone Bay Regatta 2010

The South Shore of Nova Scotia’s newest event is coming..

The Mahone Bay Regatta (featuring Pirate Day) will run from Friday 30 July noon until Sunday August 1 afternoon.

Following a successful meeting at the Mahone Bay Centre on April 5, the regatta planning crew are implementing a variety of fun events, workshops & entertainment in addition to increasing the on water activity and racing schedule.

The Mahone Bay Centre has 3 rooms booked for 2.5 days of workshops and displays and we are discussing plans to introduce a marine arts and crafts display promoting the oceanic environment and  local artists. A fundraising orienteering on water event is being planned to raise awareness of the MICA islands and to help their cause.

Paul Buchanan and his volunteer team are organizing entertainment events at the bandstand, busking throughout town and there will be a musical entertainment night at the Mug & Anchor pub.

There are other activities being planned such as extensive wharf dislays and a marine flea-market- these will compliment the new regatta itself which will likely see a substantial increase in sail boat races and on water activities.

Finally on Saturday we are having a “Pirate day” throughout the town where we have a number of high profile activities planned with a pirate themed including treasure hunts, pirate workshops and a Captain Morgan promotion at the pub.

We will be offering encouragement to businesses in town to have a pirate day too, with dressing up, pirate scarecrows, flags etc. Pirate day will reach it’s climax during the evening at the Mahone Bay wharf which will see a very large costume event on land and water, pirate costume contest, pirate skit performances by South Shore Players, Kings Orange Rangers, Long Boats and finally the Burning of the Teazer re-enactment.

As always, we do still need financial (and in kind) support for this new event which we hope brings a way forward to preserve a fun and informative marine themed event in the town of Mahone bay while addressing the problems of volunteerism and escalating costs..

The crew hope you will consider supporting the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Society to implement the Mahone Bay Regatta by attending this new fun event and by offering your volunteer services or financial support.

Thank you for your continuing support and that of our sponsors
